ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks: What Influencer Marketers Need to Know

Keep the corks in your champagne bottles.

Back in mid-January (eons ago in AI industry time), OpenAI dropped a new feature called Scheduled Tasks for ChatGPT. It made a big splash in the online community, so I wanted to test it out to see what it had to offer the world of influencer marketing.

TL;DR: it’s interesting but not interesting to the influencer marketer–yet.

However, it is a sign of things to come and where ChatGPT and the AI industry at large is going, so it’s worth exploring in today’s deep dive.

What's the Deal with Scheduled Tasks?

Tasks is a new feature that's currently only available to paid ChatGPT users. It's designed to work seamlessly with ChatGPT's conversational abilities, which is its main draw. Here’s how OpenAI describes it:

In this early beta, you can create scheduled tasks that enable ChatGPT to run automated prompts and proactively reach out to you on a scheduled basis. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to create scheduled tasks for the following:

“Can you give me a briefing on AI news each afternoon?”

“Practice French with me daily”

“Remind me about my mom’s birthday”

Sounds handy, but how does it work in practice?

What Can (and Can't) Tasks Do?

What Tasks Can Do

Tasks shines when put to use in everyday life.

For example, Andrew Wilkinson tweeted that he's using Tasks to:

  • Get daily summaries of comedy, music events, and new movies in his hometown.

  • Check for new restaurant openings and pop-ups every Monday.

  • Find weekend activities for kids based on the weather.

Personally, I set up a daily AI + influencer marketing campaign news digest. Here’s the most recent update it gave me (click to bigify):

Pretty neat! To set this up, I only needed a basic prompt with a few details about what I’m looking for and ChatGPT does the rest. It does feel a little magical.

(FYI here’s the prompt I used to generate this summary; it could be heavily optimized:

Search for the most recent news articles, case studies, research, and other sources related to artificial intelligence in influencer marketing, and share a daily summary with me.)

Cool though it may be, I’m not recommending anyone rush to pull out their credit card and slap down $20/mo for ChatGPT Plus just yet.

What Tasks Can't Do (Yet):

Scheduled Tasks has numerous severe limitations that make it little more than an AI-powered RSS feed (and a worse one at that).

  • Integrate with external calendars or task management tools

  • Take actions on behalf of the user

  • Handle more than 3 active tasks at once

Without these capabilities, Tasks is a worse version of every other specialized app, such as: reminders, calendars, RSS feeds, and project management.

It’s only advantage is it uses natural language, which is something no other app I’m aware of boasts currently (though many apps are adding these AI-supported features as we speak).

Looking to the Future

Here's where things get interesting. AI is only as good as the tools and data it has access to. I believe OpenAI will gradually expand Tasks to include integration with external tools and data sources.

The real game-changer? Agents. The future of AI lies in its ability to act on behalf of the user. Once Tasks can interact with the world outside ChatGPT, that's when it'll become truly powerful.

Imagine this: automated reports, real-time insights, and updates delivered exactly when you need them. No more sifting through endless data or setting multiple reminders. Your AI assistant could handle campaign tracking, influencer discovery, and performance analysis, all while you focus on strategy and relationship-building.

Wrapping Up

So, here's the TL;DR:

  1. ChatGPT Tasks is here, but it's still in its infancy

  2. It's not a must-have for influencer marketers... yet

  3. Keep an eye on its development – it's a glimpse into the future of AI in our industry

While Tasks might not be revolutionary right now, it's a step towards more advanced AI tools that could transform how we work. Stay curious, stay informed, and you'll be ready to leverage these tools when they truly take off.
